Does Vaping Make You Fat?
Whether it’s the sinfully sweet taste of the vapour, or the fact that many of the most popular e-liquids come in dessert, candy or fizzy drink flavours, it’s not uncommon for concerned vapers to contact us asking, does vaping make you fat?
With this in mind, we thought it was time to set the record straight, so if you’re wondering does vaping make you gain weight then here’s all the info you need to put your mind at ease.
The answer might shock you!
Could Vape Juice Ingredients Make You Fat?
To see whether vaping can have an impact on our weight, first we need to look at two things: what’s in vape juice and why people seem to think vaping makes you fat.
To begin, let’s take a look at the most abundant ingredients in e-liquid: vegetable glycerin (VG) and propylene glycol (PG).
VG is a viscous liquid that’s derived from vegetable oils such as coconuts, palm or soybean. Thick in nature and able to withstand high temperatures, when vaped it produces those thick clouds of vapour you get with sub-ohm devices, which is why we use it in the e-liquid manufacturing process.
The other main ingredient in e-liquid is PG, a derivative of petroleum and a great emulsifier which helps to keep all the ingredients mixed together.
VG and PG make up the bulk of our vape juice, so if we’re concerned about vaping making us gain weight, the logical thing to do would be to look at how many calories these two ingredients contain. After all, when it comes to the stuff we’re ingesting, the higher the calories the higher the chance of us piling on the pounds!
In that case, you’ll be glad to know neither VG or PG contain many calories at all. In fact both contain around just 4 calories per gram, so unless you’re moving through e-liquid bottles like they’re going out of fashion then you have nothing to worry about with these ingredients!
Can Any Other E-Liquid Ingredients Make You Fat?
Due to the sweet nature of e-liquid, perhaps it’s natural for some to assume that vaping can cause us to gain weight. And let’s face it, most things that taste as delicious as your favourite vape juice are most definitely off-limits if you’re counting your calories!
With that said, you’ll be delighted to know the sweet taste in e-liquid usually comes from sweeteners, as opposed to sugar.
That’s right, rather than making our products with ultra-calorific, refined white sugar, e-liquid manufacturers like ourselves prefer to use artificial sweeteners such as sucralose, which is actually 600 times sweeter than sugar but without any of the belt-busting calories!
Other manufacturers may use sugar in their e-liquids but even these won’t make you fat as vaping small amounts of liquid isn’t going to cause weight gain.
The only way e-liquid could make you fat is if you were to drink large amounts of a vape juice which contained sugar – something you should absolutely never do for obvious reasons!
Does Vaping Make You Fat – What’s the Conclusion?
So, does vaping make you fat? The simple answer is no. That’s because most e-liquids contain a combination of vegetable glycerin (VG), propylene glycol (PG), artificial sweeteners and flavorings – none of which are going to cause you to gain weight, especially in such small amounts.
And even if you were to vape e-liquid containing sugar, unless you’re drinking large volumes, which is something you obviously shouldn’t do, then you wouldn’t be consuming enough for it to affect your weight.
