There’s no need to worry if there’s no flavour from your vape because there are steps you can take.
If you find yourself in a situation where you’re suddenly not tasting your vape, and you’re not getting any flavour from it at all, you’ll be wondering what on earth is going on with your device. While your e-cigarette may still be working just fine, you might think it’s just become a dud, or that there’s something off with your e-liquid — or even yourself. Just what is going on, and how can you get your cherished vape taste back?
When there’s no flavour from your vapes, the first thing you need to realise is that you are not alone and that it’s something that’s fairly widespread and common and happens to vapers every now and then. That’s a relief. So what do you do about it, what causes you to lose the taste of your e-liquid and how can you fix it so you’re enjoying your vapes again? We’ve done the research, so you don’t have to, and found out all about it, including how to restore your flavour, so let’s have a look.
What Causes No Flavour from Vapes?
There may be several reasons why your vapes are currently tasteless, or there could just be one. As we’ve said, it could be something to do with your vapes or it could be you — and quite often it’s the vaper themselves when they get what’s known as vaper’s tongue. Practically everyone who has ever vaped has experienced this phenomenon in which you lose the taste sensation on your tongue, and it can last for several days or even weeks.
Also known as vaper’s fatigue, this curious condition can often be caused by an overload of flavour sensations on the taste buds lining the tongue: they become inundated with so many flavours that they become something like numbed, and so you can’t pick up the taste. It can especially happen when you mix e-liquid flavours and have a whole medley of them going on at the same time. Your poor taste buds can’t quite keep up, so they check out for a while. Easing off on strong and mixed juices will soon ease them back to life, however.
If you suspect you may be suffering from vaper’s tongue — your tongue may also have a gritty feel to it — it’s recommended that you drink more water than usual. This is because vaping a lot can lead to dehydration, and many vapers carry a bottle of water with them and take regular drinks. Loss of moisture, especially along the tongue, is due to the PG and VG bases that are commonly used in e-liquids, as they absorb water and can lead to the build-up of a type of film over the tongue. This can prevent vape flavours from reaching the taste buds, but by drinking lots of water, you’ll flush it away and restore your sense of taste.
Also, if you’re vaping and also smoking, you won’t be doing yourself any favours in the flavour department. Cigarette smoke is notorious for deadening all the senses, including taste — and, anyway, vapes are intended to stop you smoking so that you’re not inhaling all those toxic chemicals and can get healthier. So put down those cigarettes and just vape, and soon enough your sense of taste will start to return.
Equipment Issues and No Flavour from Vapes
Now we turn to vape gear and look at what might be happening that’s causing you to have no flavour from your vape. E-cigarettes now come in a myriad of shapes and sizes, but they mostly function the same way: a battery is used to heat e-liquid that’s in a chamber or pod, and vapour containing a flavour and nicotine (or none) is given off. Some vapes are simple, while others can be relatively complex and contain many parts or components — it can happen that occasionally they’re not performing optimally, if at all.
Before you go rushing back to your vape shop, or contact the online vape store where you bought your vape, do some detective work of your own. First, look at the battery, and see if it’s providing enough power so that your device is working as it should. Just because you’re able to vape and are producing clouds, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re getting enough juice to release those great e-liquid flavours and give you the taste you love and are used to. It might be time for a charge-up, or to swap out a battery, if that’s the kind of device you have.
Also examine your atomiser, or tank, and see if it’s clean, especially around the all-important coil. Every time you fill your atomiser and vape the liquid in it, residue can build up in various areas, including along the coil. This can result in your device not heating the e-liquid to the right temperature, and so the flavours you’re expecting are not being properly released.
Disappearing Flavour from Your E-liquids
Also bear in mind that different e-liquids are better suited to various kinds of vape gear and their wattage. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for both your e-juice and the gear you’re using it in. It might be that your nic salts flavour isn’t designed to be used with the new coil you’ve installed. You can also adjust the wattage and see if a higher or lower level provides the best taste — start with the recommended wattage and adjust up and down from there, and don’t be afraid to experiment a bit until you find your sweet spot.
If your vape gear works with pods or cartridges and you suddenly find there’s no flavour from your vape, the e-juice might be running low or have run out. It’s time to swap it out for a new pod or cartridge and see if you get your e-juice taste again. Pro tip: don’t vape your refills till the bitter end in an attempt to get as much as possible out of them, as you may end up getting nothing other than burnt and dry hits and shortening the life of your pod or coil.
Try steeping your e-liquid so that the flavour is deeper and richer and you get a far better taste. There’s a number of ways you can go about it, and one of the easiest is just to store your e-liquids in a cool and dark place for a while — two or three weeks should do it — giving them a shake now and then so that all the elements are mixed. You can also expose your e-liquids to the air, in a process known as oxidation, which will result in better flavour. Another trick is to place an opened bottle halfway in a bowl of warm (not hot) water and leave it till it cools. Then put back on the cap, shake well and you should be good to go with a great taste sensation.
So next time you find yourself with no flavours from your vapes, you can try some or all of these potential remedies and your e-liquid taste should come flooding back.
